You were in a car accident, you're hurting, and suddenly everyone is talking about X-rays and MRIs.

What's the difference—and how do you know which one you need?

The biggest thing to understand is that these tests provide different types of information.

What Is an X-Ray Used For?

X-rays are commonly used to evaluate bones and certain structural problems.

Following an injury, a healthcare provider may order an X-ray based on your symptoms and physical examination.

What About an MRI?

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging.

An MRI can provide detailed images of many soft-tissue structures, including spinal discs, ligaments, muscles, and other areas that may not appear the same way on a standard X-ray.

That's why someone can sometimes have an X-ray that doesn't explain their ongoing symptoms and later have additional imaging recommended.

Does Everyone Need an MRI After a Car Accident?

No.

The type of imaging you need—if you need imaging at all—should be determined by a qualified healthcare provider based on your symptoms, examination, and individual circumstances.

But here's where things get confusing for patients:
